Having Celiac Disease means you need to watch what you eat, but it also means that you need to watch your heart health. Here at FaveGlutenFreeRecipes, we want to give you up-to-date information, so we popped over to the Celiac Disease Foundation to see what Janelle Smith, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, had to say about gluten free heart health. According to Smith, individuals with Celiac Disease have a higher risk of contracting other diseases and heart conditions. But, you can help decrease this risk by following a gluten free diet.
 

The biggest tip from Smith is that you shouldn’t purposefully cheat on your gluten free diet. You may not think it’s a big deal, but you’re doing a disservice to your heart. Even the tiniest bit of gluten isn’t good for your heart’s health. However, everyone makes mistakes, and it’s hard to be a 100% sure of what you put in your body. So, don’t panic if you accidentally eat a bit of gluten.
 

To protect your heart, you should balance omega-3 fatty acids with omega-6 fatty acids. While it is important to balance these two things, you first need to know where they're found. Omega-6 can be found in vegetable oil, butter, and lard. Omega-3 can be found in canola oil, flaxseed, soybeans, fish, fish oil, and walnuts.  
 

One way to help balance your diet is to institute Meatless Mondays and Fishy Fridays. These two days will help you and your family decrease your dietary cholesterol, and you’ll have more plant and fish sources of fatty acids. This will also help to decrease the ratio of animal and omega-6 fatty acids. All in all, Meatless Mondays and Fishy Fridays will help to keep your heart healthy, so making the change is definitely worth it.
