Starting the first week of December, I like to pull out my Christmas music - Canadian Brass, Classical Gas, the Pentatonix, various religious albums of carols and listen to them as I complete household tasks. Usually I'm singing or be-bopping along with the music as I clean, bake, make holiday crafts, write Christmas cards etc.

When the grand children were little we would have our Christmas over Thanksgiving weekend because we live north to south on the east coast. It was nice because we couldn't be together for Christmas and it let them be with the other side of their family.

I hide a figurine of baby Jesus for each child. They must find the one with their name on it and then tell what Christmas is really about. Then they can open gifts.

My children have moved away and it is very difficult being alone but I try to keep up my Christmas spirit so I go to the dollar store, buy lots of Xmas wrap, bows, and tape and leave them on door steps with a little note to ease the stress on those who have even less than I do. Its a little thing but someone did it for me years ago, and it made me so happy. I also leave little, supportive "love notes" in public bathrooms and libraries in hopes that someone will not feel so all alone during the holidays. Then I just trust that the person who needs to read them will find them.

The past few Christmases have been a little different, with family moving away from my home town (and my niece being born on Christmas day two years ago!). But we always make time to make candy peanut butter snowballs and enjoy them, even while everyone is busy with other activities.

Really just the whole atmosphere. Lighting incense, putting up the tree, listening to Christmas music, having a fire in the fireplace, having family over, going to a nice dinner on Christmas Eve, all those lovely things.

Instead of buying everyone gifts, my grandmother shops around garage sales and dollar stores throughout the year. The presents will range from silly to serious. In the past, we've received a box of chocolate, an umbrella, a pair of mittens, a McDonald's Happy Meal toy, and even a dancing pumpkin decoration. She'll wrap the presents, and we'll play a game of Bingo. When you win, you get to choose a gift. It's hilarious to see everyone's reaction when someone unwraps a singing fish or a pair of mismatched socks. The best part is that the money my grandmother saves on gifts goes to a local charity.

Every year, even though me and all of my sisters are adults now, we will spend Christmas Eve together and before we go to bed on Christmas Eve we will make a fire and my dad will read us Twas the Night Before Christmas. He's done this since we were little and could sit on his lap, and now we all sit on the couch mouthing the words with him since we all have it memorized.

A few weeks before Christmas, my family always watches Miracle on 34th Street (the original black and white version) while eating Chinese takeout. When the movie is over, we each get to open one present. A bit of a "sneak peek" of what's to come.

On Christmas Eve, we go to Mass and then head straight over to Olive Garden for dinner with our old neighbors. I always order the EXACT SAME thing - stuffed chicken marsala. What can I say? I'm a creature of habit.

On the night we decorate the house for Christmas each year, my family always turns all the lights off in the house once we're done decorating, turns on all the newly-hung Christmas lights, and sits down to share our favorite Christmas memories from throughout the years while enjoying the cozy glow from the Christmas lights.
